Dr. Lane received her B.A. degree, Phi Beta Kappa, from Vassar College, her M.D. from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, an M.P.H. degree from Columbia University School of Public Health and Administrative Medicine, and completed a residency in public health and preventive medicine at the New York City Department of Health. She is board certified in Preventive Medicine. Dr. Lane is currently a State University of New York Distinguished Service Professor, Vice Chair of the Department of Family, Population and Preventive Medicine and Division Head of Preventive Medicine and Population Health.

In addition to also being the departmental Division Head for Graduate Medical Education, she is the Director of the Stony Brook residency program in General Preventive Medicine and Public Health, which she has been since its inception in 1982. Dr. Lane is also the Associate Dean for Continuing Medical Education at the Stony Brook University School of Medicine. Dr. Lane has been the Principal Investigator of the NHLBI Women’s Health Initiative Center at Stony Brook since its inception in 1994, and the Principal Investigator for a series of NCI grants spanning a 30-year period that focused initially on improving breast and subsequently colorectal cancer screening rates. She directed one of the five initially funded CDC Colorectal Cancer Screening Demonstration Programs which covered the cost of colonoscopy screening for the uninsured and underinsured in Suffolk County, NY.

Dr. Lane is a prominent national leader in preventive medicine organizations, having served as President of the American College of Preventive Medicine, Chair of the American Board of Preventive Medicine and President of the Association of Teachers of Preventive Medicine. She has also been active nationally in continuing and graduate medical education including serving as a member of the board of directors of both the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and is currently a member of the ACGME-ACCME Coordinating Committee. On the local and regional level, Dr. Lane chairs the CME Committee of the Suffolk Academy of Medicine and previously chaired the CME Committee of the Medical Society of the State of New York. She has published numerous, frequently cited articles in peer-reviewed journals and has been the recipient of several prestigious awards, including the ACGME Parker J Palmer Courage to Teach Award which nationally recognizes residency program directors for their dedication to teaching, patient care, leadership and mentorship.
