Panel Session: The COVID-19 Pandemic & Impacts To Colorectal Cancer Screening

Amidst March 2020, National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, medical providers, and healthcare systems across the country halted many “non-essential” healthcare services and procedures in hopes of significantly reducing the spread of COVID-19, including colorectal cancer screening. The action caused immediate and longer-term impacts on our field, including delayed and canceled screenings, missed diagnoses, and a further exacerbation in disparities and burdens felt by under-represented communities – all of which will lead to excess deaths from colorectal cancer. This session will explore how the pandemic affects colorectal cancer screening at different intersections of the healthcare system.

  • Moderator and Presenter: Folasade (Fola) May, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Director of Quality Improvement, UCLA Health; Veterans Affairs
  • Gastroenterology: Mark Pochapin, MD, President of the American College of Gastroenterology; Gastroenterology Division Director at NYU Langone Health
  • Hospital Systems: Jay Bhatt, DO, Principal, JDB Strategies LLC, and former SVP & Chief Medical Officer of the American Hospital Association
  • Primary Care: Carmen Guerra, MD, MSCE, FACSP, Vice-Chair of Diversity and Inclusion, Department of Medicine; Associate Director of the Office of Diversity, Abramson Cancer Center; University of Pennsylvania
  • Community Health Centers: Cheryl Modica, PhD, MPH, BSN, Director, Quality Center, National Association of Community Health Centers

*During the Q&A section of this session, some questions and responses included discussion around the role of CT colonography as a screening option during the pandemic. CT colonography remains an important, safe, and recommended screening option during the COVID-19 pandemic.
