ICYMI: How Erie Family Health Centers Increased Their CRC Screening Rate to 64%

Read Our Latest Blog Covering the Work of the 2025 National Achievement Award Grand Prize Winner

Earlier this month, the ACS NCCRT was thrilled to highlight our 2025 National Achievement Award Grand Prize winner, Erie Family Health Centers (Erie), with an in-depth blog on their work. Erie is a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) that serves more than 95,000 patients at 13 locations across Chicago, IL and its northern suburbs. At the start of the project in 2023, Erie’s overall screening rate was 49% for colorectal cancer (CRC). Now, their rate jumped to 64%, screening 16,603 patients for CRC during the project period. To learn more about their multipronged and thoughtful approach to the work, lessons learned, and what was essential to their success, read their guest blog today!

ACS NCCRT Resource Highlight: Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

Take Time to Review Our Companion Guide and Armchair Conversation

In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, the ACS NCCRT wants to highlight two of our resources related to these communities.

  • At our 2024 ACS NCCRT Annual Meeting, we hosted our annual Armchair Conversation on CRC health equity on the topic of barriers and solutions to reaching Asian American communities for CRC screening. View the recording to hear the discussion with four expert speakers, who emphasized that addressing disparities in CRC screening among Asian American communities requires disaggregated data, culturally competent care, and meaningful community engagement.
  • Our 2017 Asian Americans and CRC Companion Guide, a complement to our suite of market research-based CRC screening messaging guidance, seeks to provide advice about how to communicate about CRC screening with seven Asian American subgroups, including perceptions, recommendations, and tested messages in several Asian languages. View the Guide.

American Cancer Society Releases CancerRisk360

CancerRisk360 Allows Anyone to Assess Their Cancer Risk Online

The American Cancer Society (ACS) recently released their CancerRisk360, which is intended to be an educational resource that empowers individuals with information to support overall health and understand factors that may reduce the risk of cancer. The web-based tool was developed by a team of experts at the ACS with advice from an external expert advisory group with backgrounds in cancer prevention, early detection, genetics, cancer risk, and health behavior change.

The tool prioritizes published, guideline-driven recommendations and is intended to be used for general information only and not intended to replace professional medical advice but is a great tool for anyone to assess their cancer risk and then discuss with their care team.

Survivorship Highlight: Webinar Opportunity and Survey Results

Register For an Upcoming Webinar and View the ACS CAN’s Recent Survey Results

The ACS NCCRT wants to highlight two upcoming survivorship-related opportunities for our members and partners:

  • Join the ACS Comprehensive Cancer Coalitions (CCC) team on June 17 from 3-4PM ET for a webinar titled, “Comprehensive Cancer Coalitions and the Evolving Landscape of Cancer Survivorship”. It will cover new standards for survivorship care and will share evidence and pragmatic use cases of how CCCs can improve the integration of survivorship-focused work into their cancer control plans and initiatives. Register here.
  • The ACS Cancer Action Network’s (ACS CAN’s) latest Survivor Views survey, which includes cancer survivors and others ages 45 and older, found that 31% of adults have been more than one year behind on cancer screenings. Fifty-three percent of those respondents cited out-of-pocket costs as a barrier to getting screened, while another 47% shared that getting insurance approvals for covered screenings was of concern.

Member Highlight: Colorectal Cancer Alliance Launches “Screen Smart” Initiative

The Alliance Created the Initiative in Response to Their State of Screening Survey Results

The Colorectal Cancer Alliance (the Alliance) recently published their State of Screening Survey that found more than half of US adults (51%) put other everyday tasks ahead of getting screened for CRC. In response, they have launched their new “Screen Smart Initiative” which brings together insights from medical experts, researchers, and advocates to make CRC screening decisions easier for both patients and healthcare providers. The ongoing program will create easy-to-follow tools and plain-language resources so everyone can understand their options and take action.

Many thanks for the great work you do!
