As part of a series, the ACS NCCRT is thrilled to highlight our 2025 National Achievement Award winners with in-depth blogs on their work. This time, we are focusing on Georgia Center for Oncology Research and Education (Georgia CORE). Georgia CORE is a state-wide non-profit that is a current recipient the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s) Colorectal Cancer Control Program (CRCCP). They have focused their efforts in rural and under resourced Southern Georgia and since 2020, have screened 32,654 people through their program. Registration is Now Open for Our Latest Members-Only Blue Star Conversation and Rural Guidebook Webinar
Join the ACS NCCRT at two signature virtual events in July by registering today for:
- ACS NCCRT Blue Star Conversation, titled “2025 Supreme Court Case Update: How Braidwood v. Kennedy Could Affect Insurance Coverage for CRC Screening.” This members-only program, held on Wednesday, July 9 from 1:00-2:00 PM ET, will feature a non-partisan panel discussion of policy experts who will discuss the implications of the soon-to-be announced Braidwood v. Kennedy Supreme Court decision. After the presentation, participants will have an opportunity to discuss the implications of the case and outcome, including how it may affect their work and services. - New Resource Webinar for ACS NCCRT CRC Screening in Rural Communities Best Practices Guidebook: This webinar, held on Monday, July 28 from 3:00-4:00 PM ET, highlights this upcoming resource and covers an overview of recent data and statistics that illustrate the burden of CRC in rural areas, an outline of the five recommended steps to increase CRC screening rates in rural communities, and a deep dive into best practices and lessons learned from two of our five exemplary case study site interviewees. Southeastern Colorectal Cancer Consortium Meeting a Success!
CRC Screening Advocates and Experts Convened June 11-13
The ACS NCCRT staff were thrilled to convene with numerous members and partners at the Southeastern Colorectal Cancer Consortium in Savannah, GA earlier this month. Kudos to the meeting planners for putting together a fantastic agenda! We were pleased to share a sneak peak of the soon-to-be-released ACS NCCRT CRC Screening in Rural Communities Best Practices Guidebook (see above for webinar information). It has been announced that South Carolina will host the 10th Annual SECRC Conference in 2026—details will be shared in future editions of this newsletter.
United States Cancer Statistics Released
The Data Covers New Cancer Case through 2022 and Cancer Deaths through 2023
The CDC has released their latest cache of data through the United State Cancer Statistics program, which has been sharing comprehensive cancer data with the public since 1999. Now, data covers cancer cases from 1999 to 2022 and cancer deaths from 1999 to 2023 in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, combining cancer registry data from the CDC’s National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR) and the National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program. Some highlights from the data:
- In 2022, 1,851,238 new cancers were diagnosed (442 per 100,000 people).
- Cancer continued to be the second leading cause of death in the U.S. overall in 2023, resulting in 613,349 deaths.
- Cancer rates (the number of cases relative to the population) have gone down since 2003.
