2024 National Achievement Honoree Blog: Unity Medical Center

Learn About How a Rural Critical Access Hospital Increased CRC Screening Rates

In October of 2022, Unity Medical Center (UMC) had a CRC screening rate of 41%. After attending an impactful presentation on CRC screening in their home state of North Dakota, they created a multidisciplinary team to increase their rates. As of September 2024, their screening rate for patients aged 45-75 years old has reached 71.5%.

This latest interview in our series of blog posts highlighting the 2024 80% in Every Community National Achievement Award honorees tells the story of how UMC engaged their multidisciplinary team to reach patients in their rural community in innovative ways.

Lastly, it’s the time of year to start thinking about the organizations and individuals that you would like to nominate—the call for nominations to the 2025 80% in Every Community National Achievement Awards will be announced later this month!

ACS NCCRT Director Spotlight: Western Colorectal Cancer Consortium

Kaitlin Sylvester, MPA, Strategic Director, ACS NCCRT, speaking at the WC4.

“I had the privilege of attending the 3rd Annual Western Colorectal Cancer Consortium Conference (WC4) at UC Davis this last week. This hybrid event brought together national and regional experts to share how we can all work across the colorectal cancer continuum to improve outcomes for all. The agenda included expert presentations on advocacy, early-age onset CRC signs and symptoms, primary risk factors for CRC, and ongoing efforts to improve access to quality CRC screening. It was an honor to be invited to share the work of the ACS NCCRT with such an esteemed audience, and I would like to extend my gratitude to Margaret Hitchcock, PhD, and the WC4 planning team for inviting me to participate. I’m looking forward to the next WC4 and I hope our ACS NCCRT members located in one of the thirteen states represented in the Western Region (AK, AZ, CA, CO, HI, ID, MT, NV, NM, OR, UT, WA, WY) will look to add this wonderful event to their calendars in the upcoming year.”
