Dr. Gloria Coronado Selected as Vice-Chair Elect of the ACS NCCRT
Dr. Coronado Has Previously Served the ACS NCCRT in Multiple Roles
The ACS NCCRT is pleased to announce that Gloria Coronado, PhD, a longtime volunteer and supporter of the Roundtable, has been selected as our new Vice-Chair elect. Dr. Coronado previously served on the ACS NCCRT Steering Committee from 2016 to 2020, has been a member of the Annual Meeting Planning Committee and Nominating Committee, and is currently the co-chair of the ACS NCCRT Community Health Centers Strategic Priority Team. She has been an invaluable thought leader during her time working with the ACS NCCRT, helping to advise in the creation of essential CRC resources like the Steps Guide and the Mailed FIT Implementation Guide.
Beyond her engagement with the ACS NCCRT, Dr. Coronado’s commitment to community engagement, health disparities, leveraging partnerships, and her personal experiences made her rise to the top of the candidates put forward to our Nominating Committee’s competitive review. It’s also clear how well respected she is in the field by the many awards she’s been honored with throughout her career, such as a SCOPY from the American College of Gastroenterology and the University of Washington School of Public Health’s 50 Changemakers of Public Health. Her work is also fueled by a personal connection to colorectal cancer, including a close family member who has been diagnosed and treated for the disease. This passion can be seen by her many publications, presentations, and grant-funded research projects in her recent past position at the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research and presently at the University of Arizona where she currently serves as the Associate Director of Population Sciences at the University of Arizona Cancer Center, as well as the Maynard Endowed Chair, Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and Director of Health Disparities Research at the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health at the University of Arizona. As the ACS NCCRT moves forward and expands to strategic areas along the cancer continuum, Dr. Coronado’s experience, both professionally and personally, will surely help guide how we interact with communities, caregivers, and survivors.
When informed of the nomination committee’s choice and steering committee’s confirmation, Dr. Steven Itzkowitz, chair of the ACS NCCRT, said, “I am delighted that Gloria Coronado has been selected as Vice-Chair Elect of the ACS NCCRT. Her numerous research contributions in the field of CRC screening, along with her many years of service to the ACS NCCRT, make her a perfect fit for this new role, and I am greatly looking forward to working even more closely with her in the years ahead.”
Dr. Coronado has indicated that the prospect of assuming the role of Vice-Chair is exciting due to the opportunity to further contribute meaningfully to the ACS NCCRT, an organization that has consistently inspired and supported her work. She is honored to be chosen as Vice-Chair Elect and when notified of the selection said, “The ACS NCCRT has been a valuable source of information and resources, as well as of inspiration and hope over the years. I am looking forward to partnering with Dr. Itzkowitz and the team at ACS to advance efforts to get more people screened and reduce the burden of colorectal cancer in all communities.”
Emily Bell, MPH, director, ACS NCCRT, shared, “I’ve had the great pleasure of working with Dr. Coronado for over a decade—in my years with ACS NCCRT and previously in the Pacific Northwest through my role with the Washington State Department of Health. Dr. Coronado’s passion, experience, and thoughtful leadership will add tremendous value to our work to save more lives from colorectal cancer.”
